Jamaica Experiences Moderate Earthquake, Measuring 5.3

On Friday, August 12, 2023, at 8:01 AM, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 struck Jamaica, causing widespread tremors across the island.

According to the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, the epicenter of the quake was located approximately 6 kilometers from Above Rocks in St. Andrew, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Numerous aftershocks were reported following the initial quake, with the largest registering a magnitude of 4.2.

No Casualties or Major Damage Reported

Despite the strong tremors, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage to buildings or infrastructure.

However, seismologists and disaster management officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions.

Epicenter Located in Seismically Active Zone

The epicenter of the earthquake is located in a region known as the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone, which spans Jamaica and Haiti.

This fault zone is known for generating moderate to large earthquakes, including the devastating magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Haiti in 2010.

Following an earthquake, residents are advised to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Check for injuries and seek medical attention if necessary.
