Tsunami Risk in Vancouver Island Region
Recent Earthquakes and Interactive Dashboard
The Geological Survey of Canada has detected a swarm of earthquakes offshore Vancouver Island. These earthquakes are located at the intersection of the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge and Sovanco Fracture Zone. The main tsunami risk for the capital region is from subduction zone earthquakes, which are typically not felt. However, the recent earthquakes are felt earthquakes, which means they have the potential to cause a tsunami.
Earthquake Risk Map
The Geological Survey of Canada has developed an interactive earthquake data dashboard that allows users to explore recent earthquakes near Vancouver Island and around the world. The map below provides an idea of the likelihood of experiencing strong earthquake shaking at various locations across the country.
Recent Earthquake Discovery
A team of geologists, mineralogists, and Earth and ocean scientists from Canada, the United States, and France has discovered a new type of fault in the Pacific Ocean. The fault is located about 1,000 kilometers west of Vancouver Island and is thought to be responsible for a series of earthquakes that occurred in the region in 2016.
