Seismologists have issued a stark warning to residents of Vancouver Island, British Columbia: a massive earthquake and tsunami are inevitable. According to a recent study, the Cascadia subduction zone off the coast of Vancouver Island is a geological ticking time bomb.

Vancouver Island lies within a complex geological region that makes it prone to high-magnitude earthquakes. The Juan de Fuca tectonic plate, which lies beneath the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Vancouver Island, is slowly diving under the North American plate. As this process continues, stress builds along the fault line, increasing the likelihood of a major earthquake.

Experts estimate that there is a 30% chance of a magnitude nine earthquake occurring within the next 50 years. Such a quake would generate powerful shaking that could last several minutes, causing widespread damage and infrastructure failure. In addition, a large tsunami is also expected, with waves potentially reaching heights of over 10 meters (33 feet).
