The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins for nations in South America in September 2023. The top six teams in the South American qualifying table will automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the seventh-placed team will advance to an inter-confederation play-off.

The first round of matches in the South American qualifiers will take place on September 12-13, 2023. Argentina will host Bolivia, while Brazil will travel to Peru. The other four matches in the first round are: Paraguay vs. Chile, Uruguay vs. Ecuador, Colombia vs. Venezuela, and Peru vs. Brazil.

The South American qualifiers will be played on a home-and-away basis, with each team playing 18 matches. The top six teams in the table at the end of the qualifying campaign will automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the seventh-placed team will advance to an inter-confederation play-off.

The inter-confederation play-off will be played in June 2026, with the winner qualifying for the World Cup. The play-off will be played at a neutral venue, and the draw for the play-off will be held in December 2025.
